The Block Parent® Program introduced in 1975 was the first Community Safety Program available to residents. The Block Parent® Program hasn’t changed over the years and it remains as a Community Safety Program that people can
participate in as time allows and not be burdened by meetings. We are part of the Block Parent® Program of Canada and Manitoba using the same window signs and the same operating standards. The Winnipeg Police Service, who conducts our Police checks, are also on our Board as our advisors. We have newly designed Block Parent® signs that are replacing all existing signs in the city. In Winnipeg we have around 2,500 dedicated Block Parent® volunteer homes. Becoming a Block
Parent® will not disrupt a busy family schedule. Even if you can only display your sign for a few hours a week – that is still helpful. This is a program that is SIMPLE, EFFECTIVE and FREE.

By constructing their own water filters out of rudimentary materials, children learn of some of the technologies that are used in third world countries for water treatment and filtration. In addition, it helps to get the point across that clean drinking water is a privilege that we enjoy in Canada and not every country is as fortunate in having the same access to clean drinking water, and this results in disease sickness and death in many countries stricken with poverty.
During the activity the Children will be assigned a country and construct filters based off the resources available to that country, reflecting the GDP of that country. Using these resources, they will be able ‘purchase’ certain materials to construct filters and will test their ability to filter dirty water. Materials include, sand, gravel, cotton, and activated charcoal, plastic pop bottles, elastics, and cheesecloth. Level of detail in the message will be adjusted to accommodate younger audiences.
Through our interactive workshops, our goal is to make the great minds of tomorrow aware of some of the issues surrounding international development, and to encourage them to adopt a global perspective. Encouraging participants to be passionate about the need for change and equipping them with the tools to take the right actions.
